Since it’s already November I cannot clearly recall the details of my third visit to the fertility doctor. But I will try my best to remember and narrate it.
I was asked to repeat my thyroid laboratory test because it was outside of reference range .
According to the fertility doctor, thyroid plays an important role for normal brain development of the baby.During the first trimester, the baby depends on mother’s supply of thyroid hormone which comes through the placenta. At around 12 weeks the baby’s thyroid start to work on its own but it doesn’t make enough until 20 weeks.
Undiagnosed thyroid dysfunction can make it difficult to conceive because of menstrual irregularities.
The thyroid produces 2 hormones: the T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine ) which is activated by TSH ( Β thyroid-stimulating hormone ) . These hormones controls how are body uses energy so they affect every organs on our body.
Over or under active thyroid is not good for the body especially for pregnant women. They can cause pre eclampsia, miscarriage and can also cause brain defects on babies.
The fertility doctor prescribed me a 50mg levythyroxine, a thyroid medicine that is same as T4 and safe for the baby.
So that’s what on Mellie’s mind.
Now, it’s your turn to tell me what’s on your mind.
Happy Reading!
