My survival tips on HSG (Hysterosalpingography)

September 1 , 2019

Hysterosalpingography (try reading it fast like a tongue twister) AKA HSG is used to check if there is a blockage in fallopian tubes. It has to be done after the menstruation and before ovulation takes place. The OB will do the math.

  • Please take note that no unprotected sex before you have the procedure because the radiation will harm the developing fetus.
  • I took the following medicine as prescribed by the OB.
Doctor’s Prescription as of Aug 24,2019
  • Bring a jacket and socks with you because the room is so cold.
  • Bring Philhealth Contribution, extra cash for PF of the doctor.
  • Arrive on the clinic 30minutes before the procedure.
  • Do your research on HSG by looking on materials on the net. You may also ask those who undergone the procedure to learn from their experience.
  • Don’t forget to shave your legs and there-on that part.

At the flouroscopy room, you will lie down on the bed assisted by the nurse. The doctor will clean the Vagina, insert a long metal stick (as i called it,i don’t know the medical term) then a catherer with a little balloon thing attached to it was inserted, then x ray dye is injected into the uterus and passes through the Fallopian tube if they are open. Then the doctors will take x rays. If they are satisfy with the pictures, the procedure is finish.

The husband was asked to go out during X-rays and asked to comeback afterwards.

The initial result of HSG will be explained right after the procedure, but the hard copy will be released a day after the procedure.

My Result: Patent Fallopian tubes, bilateral.

In the procedure I experienced discomfort upon insertion, and like a first day of mens -dysmenorrhea during injection of dye. It was painful and a kind of experience that I didn’t want to repeat again.I was able to walk after, but have a pain in my pelvic region.Bring some one with you that can assist you after the procedure.Trust me, you really need one.

I took 2 days leave from work after the procedure.

We have different level of pain tolerance. If you are reading this ,curious about HSG, and have upcoming procedure I know you can able to handle that! My doctor told us that some get pregnant after HSG. Go! Im praying for you.

For now,we wait!

Disclaimer : I’m not a doctor . Don’t self medicate. What works for me may not work for you. Consult your physician.
